Ways You Can Decorate a Child's Room Without Breaking the Bank

Decorating a child's room does not have to be an expensive proposition. In fact, children often find joy in decorating their rooms with the simplest of things, especially if they can help. Involving your child in the decorating process can be a great way to let them explore their own creative talents, plus it can help give them a great sense of pride in the end results. If you are planning to redecorate your child's room, here are some creative ideas that just might inspire you.

Pick a Theme

Young children are often especially fond of having a theme for their bedroom. It could be a cartoon character, a hobby or activity, or a favorite animal. Decorating a child's room around a theme can often produce great results. Using a theme can make it easy to coordinate the room's decor, since you will already have built-in inspiration and guidance. However, it is important not to go overboard with the theme. For example, if your child chooses a cartoon character, resist the urge to purchase too many themed bedroom accessories. Less is often more when it comes to decorating a bedroom with a theme. Choose a few key decorating accessories, such as a bedspread printed with the character, a couple of room accessories, and the window toppers. Then, purchase most of the other bedroom accessories in colors that match the chosen theme. Not only will this decorating method help keep the room from appearing too "busy," but it can also be a less expensive approach. Older children and teens often prefer a more subtle decorating approach, such as focusing on one or two of their favorite colors.

Playful Accessories for Your Wall

Make your room complete with some really fun wall accessories. Wall accessories are not necessarily just for fun, they can even serve a functional purpose. You might like to add a brightly painted hook rack or wall shelf. One very economical way to decorate your walls is to use picture frames. Fill them with artwork that your child has created, posters, or photos that they love. You can inexpensively add a great look to the walls by painting them with designs, or adding stencils or wall decals. One creative idea is to paint a wall with chalkboard paint; your child then has a large area on which to practice his or her art. Once the paint has dried, present your child with a box of colored chalk and let the decorating begin.

Hobbies as Room Decor

If your child has a favorite hobby or collection, why not use it as the inspiration for decorating their room? Not only can this decorating method be a lot of fun, but it is also a good way to get hobbies and collections out of drawers and displayed where they can be viewed and enjoyed. For example, if your child collects sports cards, you can arrange them in picture frames to use as a wall decoration. Or, a collection of favorite stuffed animals can be displayed on a wall shelf, instead of remaining hidden in the toy box.
